Our mission

Rescues need recurring support. Cats need something to chew on.

The Initiative connects those two facts with one small monthly kit.

A letter from the owner

A Second Chance. A Simple Discovery. A Mission to Help Cats.

Hi, I'm John Reeves, founder of The Lucky Cat Initiative.

In the summer of 2020, at 51 years old, I suffered a serious stroke. It was a life-changing experience, and although I've been fortunate to make a strong recovery, it gave me an entirely new perspective on life.

Today, I see every day as a blessing and another opportunity to do something good.

As part of my recovery journey, I began growing microgreens and wheatgrass, incorporating them into my daily routine. Little did I know that this new habit would eventually inspire something much bigger.

One afternoon, I had finished harvesting a tray of wheatgrass and left it outside before taking it to the compost. A neighborhood cat I'd befriended wandered over, discovered the grass, and immediately started munching away.

I remembered that cats love wheatgrass, and seeing how much this little visitor enjoyed it gave me an idea.

I started growing small trays of fresh grass for other neighborhood cats I'd gotten to know. They loved it, and I began wondering whether I could turn this simple discovery into something that would benefit even more cats.

That's when The Lucky Cat Initiative began to take shape.

I wanted to create a premium cat-grass growing kit that people could enjoy growing at home for their beloved pets. But just as importantly, I wanted the business to have a purpose beyond the product itself.

My vision is to help support cats in need, particularly homeless and community cats that depend on rescue organizations and volunteers for food, veterinary care, spay and neuter services, and opportunities to find loving homes.

The Lucky Cat Initiative brings these two goals together: giving our own cats something special while working toward a better life for cats who aren't as fortunate.

What began as part of my personal healing journey has become an opportunity to give back, one little tray of grass at a time.

Thank you for being part of the journey.

Why The Initiative exists

One-time donations are unpredictable. Rescues and shelters plan around food, medical care and foster costs that arrive every single month. A subscription can create support that shows up on the same rhythm as the need. That is the support our nonprofit partner program is being built to provide.

Our nonprofit partner program is being developed. The goal is to contribute $5 from each qualifying monthly subscription payment to a participating nonprofit partner once the program is approved.

Two lucky cats

Your cat gets fresh greens grown on your counter. A cat that is still waiting gets a little more help. That is the whole idea, and it is why the brand exists.

Why the product is intentionally simple

A cup, a seed bag, a soil puck and a small kraft box. No printed inserts nobody reads, no plastic tray, no oversized carton. Money not spent on frills is money that can go toward the product and toward cats.

No frills. Less waste. More for cats.
