What comes in the kit

  • Compostable sugar cane cup
  • Compostable paper bag with pre-measured seeds
  • Soil puck

What you need

  • A saucer or small tray
  • A 1/3 cup measuring cup
  • A fork, spoon, knife or similar utensil
  • A standard coffee mug that fits closely inside the grow cup
  • Room-temperature water

The steps

  1. Step 1

    Soak the seeds

    • Put a couple inches of water in the coffee mug.
    • Place the pre-measured seed bag into the water.
    • Use a utensil to keep the bag submerged.
    • Soak for approximately 6 hours.
    • The process is forgiving — roughly 4–5 hours can work, and a longer soak is acceptable.
  2. Step 2

    Drain

    • Drain the water.
    • Remove the seed bag.
    • Set it aside.
  3. Step 3

    Prepare the soil

    • Add 1/3 cup room-temperature water slowly to the soil puck.
    • Allow it to absorb.
    • Break up and fluff the soil.
    • Level the soil.
  4. Step 4

    Create the growing area

    • Press the bottom of the coffee mug into the center of the soil.
    • Remove it to create a circular imprint.
  5. Step 5

    Add the seeds

    • Tear open the seed bag.
    • Pour seeds inside the circular imprint.
    • Keep the seeds inside the ring so the mug can completely cover them.
  6. Step 6

    Weight the seeds

    • Place the coffee mug firmly over the seeds.
    • Leave it in place for approximately 2–3 days.
  7. Step 7

    Watch for growth

    • Keep at normal indoor room temperature.
    • Growth should begin lifting the mug after approximately 2–3 days depending on conditions.
